JOHN HESTER

Artist Statement

My earliest experience with art was drawing pictures of animals as a young boy; however, I did not take up painting until an adult. I work full-time in my studio on Sutter Street in old town, Folsom, California, and my art is on exhibit at the Procissi Wine Gallery. I have a deep love of historical places, architecture and nature. My intentions are to convey peace and beauty in my art which I hope will cause you to step outside of yourself, if just for a moment. Largely self-taught, I began studying with Folsom and Chicago Art Institute artist, Jeanne Bolin, in 1977 at the Left Bank Gallery on Sutter Street, where I was in several group shows. I have been in juried shows at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center and Folsom’s City Art Center. While living in Rome, Italy, I was in a two-person show at the Caesara Pavese 101. My world view has been deeply influenced by travels and work in Europe, Africa, Arabia and Asia. I photographed nature and architecture, and learned a great deal from the paintings of great artists in galleries and museums in Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Florence, Venice and Madrid as well as New York, Washington D.C. and San Francisco. My photographs serve both as art in themselves and inspiration for paintings. I have won awards for both paintings and photographs, and my art is in private collections in Folsom, the Sacramento and Washington, D.C. areas as well as New York, Italy, New Zealand and elsewhere. I have a B.A. and M.A. from California State University, Sacramento, and am a graduate of the Monterey Language School in Russian and Syracuse University’s program in East European Languages—Czech. I served seven years in the U.S. Air Force. I was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1936. California has been my home since 1955. I am married with three children.
