Susan Ballenger

When I’m painting on location, I’m the artist standing at her easel painting the close-up subject, not looking out at the horizon painting the grand vista. Its an approach that helps me focus on why I love to paint – juicy color combinations, bold geometry, surprising and wonderful textures, intriguing light and dark patterns. I’m less interested in representing a subject and more into pushing paint around, taking risks and letting the unexpected happen.

I received my BFA from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois and continued my studies at the Art Institute of Boston and the New England School of Art and Design, and in watercolor workshops with Robert E. Wood, Rex Brandt and Edward Betz. My exhibitions include several one-person and group shows in Massachusetts, Illinois and California. I have taught watercolor classes and workshops in Massachusetts, Maine and California and am a past member of the New England Watercolor Society.

Galleries that have represented me include the Brandybuck Gallery in Sebastopol, the Rixon Gallery in Empire, Michigan and 281 Gallery in Boston. I’ve been featured in group shows at 20th Street Art Gallery, the Brickhouse Gallery and the Kennedy Gallery, all in Sacramento.
