Heather Moss
I begin painting without any preconceived ideas of what the finished artwork was going to look like. Each painting began as a journey, ending at a surprise destination. It’s been therapeutic for me to teach myself not to control the painting process, but allow it to unfold. My paintings are what they are and what matters to me is the process of creating them.
I began painting after facilitating an art therapy program at a boy’s group home in 1999. I then used it at a counseling center which had an art room dedicated as an art tool for therapy. I experienced firsthand to use art as a tool for self-expression and self-disclosure when an intense or painful emotion is beyond words. Art is my therapy – the process of being creative and using my imagination is therapeutic.

My paintings are drawn from my emotions and feelings that I am experiencing at that given point in time; I am capturing a moment of thoughts that fill my mind. The painting flows through my hands and onto the canvas, forming them organically, as I try to keep up with the images and colors that are taking form. I’ve learned to layer paint and materials to create the surface and dimension of the image in my mind.
I work with acrylics, watercolor, and pastels on canvas to get unique movement of paint and to bring texture and depth to the painting. I enjoy letting go and letting the painting carry me. My process is ever changing and often experimental such as using water to manipulate paints, canvas on canvas, rice paper, pallet knifes, scratching, and mixing different mediums.
